When it comes to design, Brett Hatfield, founder and owner, knows what works and what doesn’t when it comes to creating beautiful outdoor spaces. He has a name for his method: the Designer Advantage. “Since every pool is unique, every pool setting must be approached with an open mind that is both inventive and imaginative,” says Hatfield. “Only by working with a professional designer and builder who has skills and artistry, can a homeowner obtain the realization of their long-held dreams.”
Hatfield believes in the art of conversation. He begins every project the same way: by engaging in a give-and-take with the homeowners in order to discern what is wanted and needed for an outdoor space. He then studies the property to determine its style. In fact, Hatfield will not begin the design process until he obtains a complete understanding of the setting. “I use hand-drawings and the latest architectural software to begin the journey from the intangible to the tangible,” explains Hatfield. “I will incorporate whatever is needed, including negative edges, bubblers, spillways, and waterfalls—but only if the space warrants them.”
With a background in landscape architecture, Hatfield may also recommend a variety of outdoor amenities that will complement the pool, like pool houses, outdoor rooms and kitchens, as well as patios and pool decks. “No matter the budget or the size of the property, we create more than a pool: we create outdoor environments that complement the home and the homeowners,” says Hatfield.
Hatfield and his Downunda team frequently update their skills and knowledge of the outdoor living industry by attending courses provided by Genesis 3 and other professional organizations. Additionally, Hatfield is a member of the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, the American Society of Landscape Architects, and is an accredited member of the Houston Better Business Bureau.
